As a fellow, you should fulfill the following requirements:

  • have experience in working with children and young adults
  • have already worked with people from different cultures
  • have a very good command of the English language
  • are highly flexible and able to work independently
  • are able to commit yourself for at least 6 months
  • are at least 25 years old

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I cannot afford to stay at least six months?
If you travel to Mongolia or Cambodia independently and you still would like to volunteer, please directly contact the respective Head of Learning Center upon your arrival. You may then have the opportunity to support the learning center in a shorter term. Please respect the following requirements:

  • You are highly flexible, self-responsible and be able to act and work independently.
  • You are at least 25 years old.
  • You have very good skills of Khmer, Mongolian or English.
  • Ideally you already know Asian culture and standards.
  • You have experience with children and/or young adults.

Do I get a stipend or financial support?
Bookbridge provides you room and board.

Who takes care of my travels to the project?
You have to cover yourself your expenses for travel.

Do I need an insurance?
You need health insurance for the respective country and indemnity insurance.

Do I get support at the project?
At the learning center, the respective Head of Library and Country Manager support you when you have questions or problems.

Does BOOKBRIDGE take care of my accommodation?
Bookbridge provides you with simple accommodation. In case you wish a high-standard accommodation you need to take care of it yourself and cover the extra expenses.

What is the organizational process before I depart for my project?
Usually, we plan volunteer services 6 months in advance. After having sent us your applications, you will get an answer within 4 weeks. In case you get accepted you first meet our staff in Europe before travelling to your project. You will have a clear defined project that you will realize during your stay. Ca. 3 months before your departure we will provide you with information material for preparing your stay.

What kind of visa do I need? Does BOOKBRIDGE help me with the visa application?
BOOKBRIDGE provides you with a recommendation letter that enables you to apply for a free or low-cost visa at the respective embassy in your country. Please consult your respective foreign secretary/ministry for further information about your project country.

Do I need vaccinations?
Please consult your national health insurance or national health ministry for further information.

How do I get prepared for my stay and project?
Before your departure you will meet your project team via skype. Our staff in Europe will prepare you for your stay and project.

How many hours a week do I have to work?
At your project you work for the same condition like the staff of our learning center. Depending on the respective country, weekly working time varies from 35 to 40 hours.

What happens in case I get sick?
You have to have health insurance for the project country in case you get sick during your stay.
